Can it truly be done? India is wokring on a new laptop that will cost under $10.00 ($7)! Talk about saving money, most people fish out at least $500 on a good working laptop. India is to reveal this extremely cheap but workable laptop today.
The wait for the world's cheapest car could soon be over as Tata Motors [Get Quote] could roll out towards the end of March 2009 from Pantnagar. Redriff has more on that here.
As far as the laptop goes, according to the UK Times Online, "It comes as an answer to the One Laptop per Child project (OLPC) led by Nicholas Negraponte, the American scientist, which set out to produce a computer for $100. The US venture ran into problems when large companies including Intel, the biggest chip manufacturer, refused to co-operate. As a result, the OLPC laptop will cost closer to $200."
India officials said it will release the plans for the laptop tomorrow. The thought of a computer that costs less than a CD, most books, and groceries for a day at my house just goes to show you anything is possible. Many websites are dobting India's new National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology program that is leading the charge on the laptop creation. The laptop has been in the making for three years and India hopes to change the face of their country. Will they succeed?
