There's a slideshow with some great photographs of the residents of Obama, Japan and the Obama girls.
It's so great seeing Obama getting so much global support. I know it doesn't mean something to others but I'm very impressed with the way he has been embraced by so many different countries and races of people. He represents us all, and I think that many people can relate to him in one way or another. United we stand, divided we fall.
Pinko
I agree indielove!!!
1This is so cool! Thanks for posting this Indie!
2You're very welcome.
3That's neat, and well said, Indie!
As much as his opponents hate to acknowledge it, our President isn't just our nation's leader but its primary representative to the rest of the world. It IS important that our leader be respected by other nations.
Of course, acknowledging that would mean acknowledging that other nations' opinions have an influence on the world, and it isn't just all about us. I know that's hard for many to realize
4I don't know how some don't get that. America is so damn ethnocentric it's frightening. It has hindered this country in so many ways i.e. complete ignorance or lack of knowledge about other countries and cultures around the world. This is why education, in many primary schools and secondary(high) schools, are sub-par in comparison with that of other countries. You know what I mean, Jude. We've talked about this months ago. Also, kids here are lacking discipline. This wasn't the case for me when I lived abroad. That just wasn't going to fly with my parents or my teachers.
5I never think isolationism, even of the unspoken, "who cares about other countries, we've got all we need here and we're better anyway" variety that results in things like people not knowing that Japan and China are two different countries (true story) and people not feeling compelled to know anything about the world, is good.
6Also, it's interesting to me how ignorant some people can be about other places in the world and love to tout superiority yet they're so quick to book vacations to France, Italy, England, Switzerland etc., the same countries they deem socialist and in many ways, not as great as America.
7Ha! True.
Did I ever tell you about the time I got annoyed by some Asian fetish guy hitting on me and told him I was from Yemen when he tried to guess my nationality? He thought Yemen was "somewhere by Vietnam, right?"
Ignorance squared.
8You know, whenever I tell someone where I'm from they say.."Oh, is that in Africa?" Why would you think that? Because my skin is brown and I clearly have some African heritage? They hardly ever say "Where's that located?", much less do they actually know where it is. I give them the benefit of the doubt on the latter because the country is tiny, less than 800,000 people live there and it's never in the news. Hasn't really been since 1978, 30 years ago.
9
I think you told me about that, yeah. I remember the one where some guy was hitting on you
and you started speaking Hebrew??? Was that the same guy?
10I think geography classes must be taught really poorly or indifferently here. I remember that my elementary social studies classes, where we learned about geography and stuff, were very dry and didn't really tie in the countries on the maps to anything interesting about them--it was just memorizing country names without any relevant cultural learning. Maybe if that was different (which would require that the national outlook be different) people would be less ignorant of the rest of the planet.
11Nope, different incident.
I don't have the patience to mess with those people anymore. Some dude came up to me yesterday while I was putting groceries in the car and started in with that "Hey, are you from Vietnam?" BS, so I just ignored him, got in the car, and drove off.
12Dude, even the textbooks suck. I remember taking World History my sophomore year and we only learned about European history. WTF? Europe is hardly 'the rest of the world', give me a break. Most countries in Europe are well developed anyway.
The only geography class I've taken in the US was in college, about 2 years ago. Professor was a total hottie too.
13Now THAT'S an incentive to learn!
14Oh my gawd...where do they come up with this stuff? Why would they think you're even interested? Do they actually think these lines WORK?
15I don't think guys like that have much luck with women who aren't being paid to be nice to them, if you know what I mean.
16Hahaha. He was a cross between Tom Cruise(Risky Business days) and Matthew McConaughey(I don't find either one attractive) but it worked. So many girls thought he was hot, I wasn't the only one and on Ratemyprofessors.com , there were so many comments talking about how hot he is. He was a little full of himself though and by the end of the semester, I found him to be not so attractive but still a goodlooking guy. He kept the class interesting, I was completely sucked in. Totally got an A in Cultural Geography. Physical Geography 101 was another story...more like Snoozefest 101.
17"I don't think guys like that have much luck with women who aren't being paid to be nice to them, if you know what I mean."
I bet no amount of money is worth it!
18Those kinds of hot professors always get in trouble with female students! Wonder if he ever taught any private lessons in his own personal Physical Geography
19JUDE! Hahaha...you're on a roll.
Nah, I don't think he would have done something like that. He wasn't young, like 38 and he has a kid. Cute little girl, I remember he brought her to class on Halloween. She was a bumblebee.
20Here's one comment:

22Dude, he teaches fabulous.
23Read this one, Jude:
I got an A in his class very easily. but i didn't learn anything in his class. I think he is a phony. A hypocrite. He pretends to be a liberal how bashes Europeans and Christianity. and he actually called Islam "A religion of peace" but i think all that is just an act. deep down inside, he is a redneck. I can't say that i repsect him.
24Well, if someone that dumb is getting As, I think there's a problem
25Hahaha.
26American Educational System: So Far Down The Tubes It's Already Washed Into The Ocean.
27Do ya think it can be recycled and made all brand spankin' new?
28For the future of this country, we'd better hope so!

30Hmmm I had a guy once try and TELL ME I was from Jamaica or Barbados. He said "I had an accent." Now I was 15 at the time, so this dude is clearly of ill repute, and was born in Los Angeles, CA. I think it was the use of proper English from a person of color that threw him
. When I
told him in fact that I was Cuban/Japanese/African American descent he proceeded to tell me I couldn't be Hispanic because Cubans weren't black (see picture below) and that my eyes weren't
chinky enough to be Asian. At that point I walked away. I should have walked away earlier. He screamed to me, "You have good hair" as I walked away.
31Wow Jessie! What an ignorant jerk. Sorry that happened to you.
32oh man, Jessie, that guy sounds like my favorite type of *sshole!!!
33LOL @ ill repute.
That guy was clearly an idiot. There are many Afro-Cubans. When you don't know anything, you should just smile and nod.
Even though I'm South American, our culture mirrors that of other countries in the Caribbean so, I used to have that 'accent' but I moved here over 10 years ago and I was a kid when we emigrated so, I no longer have it. Well, for the most part it's gone but on rare occasion someone will ask me where I'm from because they can detect a hint of an accent. Guess I assimilated to 'the American Way'. Same things happened with the siblings, I'm the oldest. My parents are still the same though.
34Oh my God, Jessie. GROSS.
35
36This is awesome! WOOT!
37And btw,
Indie.. I haven't seen you around lately!
38hey karma! KI could say the same for you! I've been around. Haha, that doesn't sound right but you know what I mean.
How've you been?
39Brazilians are rooting for Obama too. I guess all South American countries are (except -- and maybe -- Venezuela because Chavez would probably prefer McCain so he can keep on hating the US, however something tells me that his country's people think differently).
I can honestly say that having another republican as the president of the most powerful nation in the world scares the hell out of me.
40Indielove, your avatar is priceless!
41Thanks, eveday.
Btw, I think you're right about Chavez.
42Exactly, Eve. It seems Chavez would support McCain for the same reason Al Qaeda does--they know McCain would make us weaker.
43I can't stand when he goes around saying that he's been tested and Obama has not? Tested HOW? I believe that Al-Qaeda and any other terrorist organization who wants to attack us would find more motivation due to a McCain adminstration due to the fact that McCain is a 'war hero'. They'll want to take him down a few notches since he loves to tout his military experience. I'm sure they know how hot-tempered he is and would be tempted to challenge him. I hardly think they would respect him more than Obama, they thrive on committing heinous crimes.
As far as McCain and his campaign goes, they're just a bunch of grasping, devious little pretenders(stole that line from Ever After
).
44There's a great blog on HuffPo titled Just Where/When Has McCain Led in Any Crisis? His Only 2 Speeds are Lame and Impetuous (www.huffingtonpost.com/paul-abrams/just-wherewhen-has-mccain_b_137729.ht...). Really gives a good sense of just how McCain has failed whatever tests he's been given.
45I read on Yahoo(I think) that as far as early voting goes, Obama is leading 60% to 39% for McCain. That's a good sign! But let's not get lackadaisical, my friends!
46Just out of curiosity...is this a private post? Because I visited one that was posted by Bluesuze and some conservatives "invaded" the thread. It got nasty.
